Kerala
Kerala is a state located on the southwestern Malabar Coast of India. Bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Arabian Sea to the west, Kerala is geographically distinct with its long coastline, serene backwaters, and the Western Ghats forming a lush natural barrier to the east. It is one of the most densely populated states in India and is known for its high literacy rate, social development, and unique cultural heritage. Thiruvananthapuram is the capital and largest city of the state, while Kochi serves as its commercial and financial hub.
Historically, Kerala’s coast was a key part of the ancient maritime spice trade, drawing traders and travelers from across the world, including Arabs, Chinese, Europeans, and Jews. The region was never unified under a single ruler until the modern era but was instead composed of various small kingdoms such as Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar. These principalities came under colonial influence starting with the Portuguese in the 15th century, followed by the Dutch and the British. Kerala played a significant role in India’s struggle for independence and emerged as a state in 1956 through the reorganization of states based on linguistic lines.
